Halo!
Day 2 of our working experience has begun. We are now sitting in the garden of our house with a view on some palmtrees and an iguana (which seems to be quite normal here). Yesterday we had an American breakfast down at the boulevard of Kralendijk, which we've enjoyed. After that we did some sightseeing (in 2 hours, we drove around the entire island!). We saw flamingo's, various sorts of parrots, donkeys and the house of Henny Huisman (which was VERY UGLY). After 2 hours of driving and stops once in a while, we passed a part of the sea around Bonaire which contained RED water and huge belts of salt . The colour of the water was red due to the fact that the water contained a lot of salt which is a big export product in Bonaire. We've also seen a great amount of slavery houses which were obviously used for slaves to live in during the old times when there were still a lot of plantations on this island.
Our trip ended on a quite bumpy road which led to a little shed near the sea, with very clear blue water. We felt like we ran into a fotoshoot location for a magazine. We've also found some increadibly beautifull shells which we can't, unfortunately, take home with us. Some relatives of Irma (the girlfriend of Emma's uncle) lived in the shed, they were all from Bonaire. It is a tradition here to camp in a shed or tent during Easter, and the people in the shed enjoyed it so much that they were still staying there. In the shed, the people shouted amongst eachother (which is quite normal as shouting is the same for them as speaking normally). After sunbathing we went back into the shed, where the people were plaving Domino's, which they play here to gamble with money. The little girl which also waited for us on the airport came with us too. She had to do some homework for her Dutch class, with which we helped. Now it was time to leave again because Emma's uncle and Irma were expecting visitors at their house. While the visitors were here we took an hour of rest which we very much enjoyed. The visitors left and we took off to a little 'restaurant', which was more of a bar. The road was bumpy again and the restaurant was extraordinary(we think this is the best way to put it) and located in the middle of nowhere. The owners of the bar were Dutch as well as almost all off the visitors. The owners of the bar were not only the barkeepers but also the best clients of the bar, it looked like they were the ones making the bottle empty. After we had dinner we went back home and we were so tired we went to sleep almost right away, we were dreaming at half past 9. The jetlag had made us very tired.
It was 10 o'clock when we woke up this morning so we had a long night of sleep. After we had breakfast we sat down in the garden and read some books. We also did some sunbathing but we were very carefull not to get burned because Emma was still quite red from the previous day. After some time Irma came back home from her work because she had luchbreak, we ate a warm meal containing chicken, rice and potatoes. Eating a warm meal is quite normal here during lunchtime. It is now half past 1 and in a while we are going to the supermarket, to town and we will also drop by our work to make some appointments.
Well that was it for now,
Emma & Lisa
